DeeOne tells IGP Disu to stop careless statements that could trigger protest
Nigerian comedian DeeOne urged Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu to stop making careless statements that could provoke unrest, reacting to the IGP’s recent advice for citizens to refrain from recording police officers on duty. In a viral Instagram video posted Thursday, DeeOne warned that such statements risk triggering another #EndSARS-style protest, noting that the original movement was sparked by viral videos of police victimising citizens. He argued that many officers on the road are impaired—some drunk or high—and that citizens have a right to record police for their own safety, especially since reasonable officers often wear body cameras or record interactions first. He also said the IGP’s remarks could encourage indiscipline officers to keep intimidating Nigerians on the road, and stressed that police are supposed to have body cameras, with some reasonable officers being the first to record citizens before they start recording. DeeOne added that the IGP should focus on building harmony and synergy between the police and the public rather than issuing remarks that could stumble the country, and he praised the Nigerian Bar Association for calling the IGP to order over the comments.
