Defence Minister Christopher Musa confirmed Thursday that suspects arrested in connection with the alleged 2025 plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu's administration have been charged and are facing trial. Musa stated the coup attempt was 'genuine' with suspects truly intending to seize power, mainly motivated by financial gain rather than ideology.

Six suspects, including retired military officers and a police officer, were charged before the Federal High Court in Abuja, while 36 serving military personnel face separate proceedings before a General Court Martial. The plot was uncovered in late September 2025, leading to arrests of military officers, civilians, and others allegedly connected.

Musa linked recent increases in attacks across Nigeria to the approach of the 2027 general elections, noting security trends show attacks decline after elections then rise as another approaches. Security agencies are tracing terrorism financing sources including cryptocurrency and foreign networks, while maintaining the government's position of not paying ransom to kidnappers. Over 700 people have been rescued in ongoing operations, but nearly 1,000 Nigerians remain in captivity.

With suspects now in court and security challenges persisting ahead of 2027 elections, how should citizens balance confidence in judicial processes with personal vigilance about national security developments?
