Dele Momodu Claims Tinubu Aims for 2027 Sole Candidacy Like Abacha
Media mogul Dele Momodu claims President Bola Tinubu is positioning himself to be the sole presidential candidate in the 2027 elections, comparing the alleged strategy to the late General Sani Abacha’s failed sole candidacy attempt in the 1990s. Momodu made the assertion on X (formerly Twitter) in reaction to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s recent de-recognition of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) national leadership faction led by former Senate President David Mark.
Momodu sharply criticizes INEC, calling it “a debilitating albatross” that has regressed Nigeria’s democracy since the June 12, 1993 election annulment. He argues INEC acted “robotic” by swiftly recognizing the Wike-aligned faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while ignoring internal conflicts within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Momodu notes that despite governors being “coerced or cajoled and cheaply converted to APC,” the party remains “feverishly jittery,” suggesting systematic consolidation ahead of 2027.
The de-recognition of ADC further weakens opposition options, potentially clearing the field for Tinubu. Momodu warns that even the courts are “precarious” as a check, leaving only “the GOD factor” beyond human control. His Abacha comparison evokes the military dictator’s push for self-succession before his sudden death in 1998.
For Nigerians, this signals a critical early battleground for 2027: the integrity of INEC and the legal space for opposition parties. With PDP already fractured and ADC now sidelined, the opposition faces an uphill task to mount a credible challenge. Questions linger: Is this democratic erosion or mere political rhetoric? How should civil society, the courts, and international partners respond to safeguard electoral fairness? The next two years will test whether Nigeria’s democracy can withstand such pressures.
