dLocal Ghana secures EPSP licence to boost local payments in Ghana
dLocal Ghana has obtained an Enhanced Payment Service Provider (EPSP) licence from the Bank of Ghana, allowing it to offer local payment collections, merchant acquisitions, mobile-money acceptance, bank-transfer collections and local payouts through bank accounts and mobile-money wallets. Previously, dLocal routed Ghana-related payments via its global platform and regulated third-party partners.
The licence matters because Ghana’s mobile money market processed GH¢4.54 trillion (about $397 billion) in 2025, up 50.8% year-on-year, while internet banking transactions rose to 47 million from 26 million in 2024, showing a rapidly expanding digital payments landscape. dLocal says its goal is to simplify digital lives for Ghanaians by providing a reliable, seamless way to transact safely. Operating since 2020 as a payments infrastructure layer, dLocal connects global merchants to local methods—cards, mobile-money wallets and bank transfers—via API, and its “One dLocal” model lets merchants serve multiple emerging markets without building separate integrations. Revenue comes from merchant fees for processing, payouts and settlement.
With the EPSP licence, dLocal gains greater control over local operations and easier relationships with Ghanaian banks and payment partners, joining Paystack, Flutterwave and Fincra which hold similar enhanced licences. Services will be rolled out based on operational readiness, partner connectivity and regulatory requirements. The company also recently completed a $23.7 million asset deal with Kenya’s AZA Finance, acquiring Cameroonian payments entity Mint Code Solutions, AZA Finance IP and customer relationships to bolster its Francophone Central Africa footprint. dLocal’s priority now is to deepen its Ghana business by improving local connectivity, supporting merchants and building ties with consumers, banks, mobile-money operators and regulators, while continuing to evaluate West Africa opportunities.
For Nigerian merchants or investors looking at Ghana’s fintech boom, does dLocal’s locally licensed infrastructure make it a more attractive payment gateway than relying on global processors?
