Public affairs commentator Mahdi Shehu has warned Nigerians against deeply involving themselves in political conflicts, arguing that such loyalty often leads to regret. Shehu issued this caution in a post on X on Monday, reflecting on the burial of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai's mother. He noted that the event exposed the transient nature of political relationships, where former rivals unite while loyal supporters are abandoned. "Don’t ever join them to fight their opponents," he stated, adding that politicians often incite followers to attack others only to later reconcile with those same individuals, leaving supporters feeling used. Shehu cited examples such as U.S. politicians who criticized Donald Trump now serving in his cabinet, and Nigerian figures who harshly opposed Bola Tinubu but now join his government. He also mentioned that the Sultan's reported efforts to secure Nnamdi Kanu's release could signal future political shifts where El-Rufai's perceived enemies might support him. According to Shehu, these alliances are driven by personal interest, not national good, and vengeance remains a lurking possibility. His message urges supporters to reconsider blind loyalty, as politicians frequently move on while followers bear the consequences.
