Emir of Gumel Ahmed Muhammad Sani III dies at 84 after illness in Egypt
Emir of Gumel, Alhaji Ahmed Muhammad Sani III, died at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness while receiving treatment in Egypt. A palace source confirmed his death on Thursday, September 2, 2026, and said burial arrangements will be announced later.
He was the 16th Emir of Gumel and previously served as Commissioner for Information, Internal Affairs and Culture in the former Kano State Government between 1978 and 1980. During his tenure, he helped establish Triumph Newspaper and CTV67 (now ARTV) and supervised the expansion of Radio Kano.
His passing marks the end of an era for the Gumel emirate, which will now begin the process of selecting a new ruler. His contributions to media and public service left a lasting imprint on the region's information landscape.
The palace will announce burial arrangements in due course.
