EU expands tariffs on China to level trade playing field
The European Union will increase tariffs and import quotas on Chinese goods to protect European industries against unfair competition, according to EU industry chief Stephane Sejourne. The measures specifically target chemicals, metals, and clean technology sectors facing competition from China's booming exports. 'Our objective is not to break with China but to have real rebalancing,' Sejourne told Financial Times, ahead of Friday's special meeting of EU commissioners focused on China trade policy. China's exports have created large trade surpluses with many European top economies, creating political pressure to protect local industries. This trade tension could affect Nigerian businesses importing Chinese goods or competing with Chinese products in European markets.
