Ex-Iranian FM Zarif urges US deal to end conflict, proposes nuclear concessions
Former Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has publicly urged Tehran to engage diplomatically with the United States to end the current conflict, proposing Iran scale back its nuclear programme and reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for sanctions relief. Writing in Foreign Affairs, Zarif argued that while Iran may hold a current strategic advantage, prolonging the fight will deepen civilian suffering and infrastructural damage. He recommended Iran “declare victory” and shift toward negotiations to halt hostilities and prevent escalation, including a potential non-aggression pact and renewed economic ties. Zarif, a moderate figure who brokered the 2015 nuclear deal but now holds no official role, framed his appeal as aligning with Iran’s national interest—even as he criticized President Trump’s tone. Meanwhile, Trump has hinted at behind-the-scenes talks while warning of “serious consequences” if negotiations fail. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global oil route; any prolonged disruption could spike global oil prices, directly impacting Nigeria’s fuel costs and foreign exchange reserves given its dependence on imported petroleum products. For Nigerians, this means possible rises in petrol and diesel prices, affecting transport and goods costs. Will your household budget absorb higher fuel costs, or will you adjust travel and consumption now in anticipation?
