Former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Tibor Nagy has raised alarms about Nigeria’s democratic health ahead of the 2027 general elections, echoing concerns from human rights lawyer Femi Falana. In an X post, Nagy quoted Falana’s accusation that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is manipulating the judiciary to eliminate opposition and create a one-party state. He wrote: ‘If famed Nigerian human rights lawyer Femi Falana accuses Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress of manipulating the judiciary to try and bring about a one-party state by destroying the opposition, then the world should pay attention. Elections coming in months.’

Nagy’s intervention amplifies international scrutiny on Nigeria’s institutions as political tensions mount. The allegation, if true, could undermine political competition and public trust in the courts and electoral commission. With the 2027 elections approaching, such concerns may deter opposition participation and skew the political landscape.

Nigerians should watch for signs of judicial interference in opposition cases, assess the independence of election tribunals, and engage in efforts to protect democratic space. Will external pressure and local civil society be sufficient to ensure a fair contest, or will institutional manipulation become entrenched? Consider how you can contribute to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy through informed civic action.
