A cybersecurity expert from the Nigerian Computer Society has dismissed recent reports of a data breach at Remita and other Nigerian banks as 'overblown,' urging the public to maintain perspective. Speaking anonymously due to regulatory constraints, the expert noted that cyber incidents are routine globally and not unique to any platform. According to Remita's communication to partners, the incident involved unauthorised access only to certain non-financial data; all payment infrastructure, including bank integrations and APIs, remains secure and fully operational.

This matters because Remita is a critical switching platform used by the Nigerian government for Treasury Single Account collections and by banks for payment processing. Unfounded alarm could undermine confidence in the nation's fintech infrastructure, which has been a key driver of financial inclusion. With transactions continuing normally, the expert emphasises that speed of response and system resilience are what truly matter—not the mere occurrence of attempted breaches.

Financial institutions worldwide, including major banks and even agencies like the FBI and CIA, face constant attacks. Nigerian banks have similarly strengthened their defences after previous incidents and maintained operations. Remita’s primary role in switching—not direct fund custody—means even if non-financial data was accessed, there’s no evidence of financial compromise.

So while it’s natural to worry about data security, the reality is that these systems are designed to withstand and recover from such events. Rather than panic, monitor official channels for updates. If you use Remita for payments or banking, continue transactions as usual—your funds remain protected by the resilient infrastructure in place.
