FAAN launches V-Pass biometric system for domestic air travelers
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is rolling out V-Pass, a biometric identity verification system designed to make domestic air travel faster, safer and more seamless. Developed with M/S Verxid Technologies Limited, the system uses facial recognition to verify passenger identities, reducing reliance on physical ID documents. Nigerian passengers will register using their NIN and facial biometric capture, while foreign travelers will use international passports through OCR and biometric authentication. The dual-verification process checks passengers before entering restricted areas and again before boarding, aiming to prevent impersonation and identity fraud. During rollout, self-service kiosks and FAAN staff will assist with registration, which takes about one minute. Enrolled travelers can expect biometric processing in under 30 seconds. E-Gates will automate access to controlled areas, reducing queues and improving passenger flow. Airlines will gain secure access to flight schedules, passenger manifests and boarding statistics through a digital platform, while FAAN gets a Central Management System for tracking passenger movement and analytics. The system complies with Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), and passenger data won't be stored on kiosks or handheld devices. FAAN and Verxid plan a nationwide sensitisation campaign across TV, radio, social media, airport announcements and airline advisories before full deployment.
