Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, challenged the benefits of President Bola Tinubu’s fuel subsidy removal, saying Nigerians are dying and demanding accountability for how the extra revenue is being spent. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics on August 31, 2026, Falana asked where the savings have gone, warning that promises of improved infrastructure have not materialised and urging Nigerians to question federal, state and local governments on the use of the funds.

He noted that, before the subsidy removal, state governments would repair roads and later seek refunds from the Federal Government, but now there is no visible improvement despite higher revenues. Falana cautioned against returning to what he called the "era of the fuel subsidy scam," arguing that waiting for benefits is a fallacy while people suffer.

Falana urged citizens to demand transparency from all levels of government, insisting that if the government claims increased earnings, the public must see where the money is allocated. He called on Nigerians to hold officials accountable and to consider whether to accept ongoing hardship without tangible returns from the policy.
