Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, warned on Channels Television’s Politics Today that Nigerians are paying ever‑higher electricity tariffs while receiving little or no power. Speaking on Friday, Falana said electricity distribution companies are preparing another tariff increase despite persistent outages, and noted that the government has pumped trillions of naira into the DisCos without service improvement. He quoted the Electricity Act, which permits tariff hikes only when service quality improves.

This matters because Nigerian households and businesses already face erratic supply and inflated bills; a further increase would deepen the cost‑of‑living squeeze and undermine trust in the privatized power sector. Falana’s remarks echo long‑standing complaints that consumers fund inefficient monopolies without seeing better service.

Consumers should note that any tariff rise must be justified by measurable service upgrades under the law. They can demand transparency from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and DisCos, monitor upcoming tariff applications, and consider collective action or alternative energy options if hikes proceed without service gains.
