Fani-Kayode: ADC may not field INEC-recognised 2027 candidate

Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode claimed on Wednesday, April 1, 2026 that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) might not have an INEC-recognised presidential candidate for the 2027 elections due to internal wranglings and warring factions. In a lengthy tweet, Fani-Kayode warned ADC politicians to "get their house in order" or face "the greatest humiliation in the history of Nigerian politics."

This matters because ADC is part of the opposition landscape. If ADC can't field a candidate, it could consolidate opposition votes around fewer parties or create gaps in the anti-incumbency coalition. Fani-Kayode suggests supporting ADC might be "an exercise in futility" given their internal conflicts.

ADC's internal crisis isn't new - the party has struggled with factions and court cases. Last week, an Abuja court was set to rule on a suit seeking to prohibit Kingibe from ADC activities. The party's ability to present a united front ahead of 2027 remains uncertain.

With opposition figures like Atiku, Kwankwaso, Bala Mohammed, and Peter Obi positioning themselves, ADC's stability could influence coalition mathematics. If ADC collapses as a presidential vehicle, where will its supporters and structures go? How does this affect the opposition's chances against the ruling party?
