Fayemi praises Nigerian teen's historic Wimbledon debut and inspires
Ogunsakin made history on Sunday as the first Nigerian in 36 years to compete in the Wimbledon singles draw, losing 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 to Britain's Oliver Page on Court 6. The 17-year-old had qualified by beating British wildcard Archie Gray and Canada's top-ranked junior Benjamin Azar. In a Facebook post on Monday, former Ekiti Governor Kayode Fayemi praised the teenager's effort, recalling that his administration had sponsored Ogunsakin to the ITF Tennis Academy in Tunisia years ago and noting his prior appearances at the French Open.
The milestone marks Nigeria's first singles representation at any Grand Slam tournament in more than a decade. Fayemi called Ogunsakin an exceptional talent with a bright future and commended his coach, Jan Richfield Dongo, as well as supporters Bayo Okauru and Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru. The Aurum Tennis Academy said the Wimbledon campaign inspired a new generation of Nigerian tennis players.
