The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has uncovered evidence of price manipulation by local airlines during the December 2025 festive season. Director Ondaje Ijagwu stated the findings stem from an interim report released today (February 26, 2026) by the Commission's Department of Surveillance and Investigations. The report compared December 2025 fares with January 2026 levels, revealing significant price increases despite stable operating costs like fuel and taxes. On routes like Abuja-Port Harcourt, peak fares reached ₦405,000, up from post-peak levels. The Commission attributes this to arbitrary pricing decisions including yield management and reduced seat availability during predictable demand peaks. While seasonal factors are acknowledged, the Commission is examining sections of the 2018 Competition Act to determine if airlines violated consumer protection or competition laws. The FCCPC will decide on regulatory actions after completing its review.
