Federal High Court orders weekend openings for pre-election filings
Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, issued new Pre‑Election Practice Directions on 26 June 2026, effective 29 June. The directives require all Federal High Court registries nationwide to open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. exclusively for filing pre‑election matters. Every pre‑election case must now commence by originating summons, accompanied by an affidavit, copies of exhibits, a written address (double‑spaced, 12‑point font, maximum 15 pages) and an affidavit that no similar suit exists elsewhere. Respondents must enter appearance within seven days of service and file a counter‑affidavit and written address within ten days. The rules limit adjournments to two per party, prohibit adjournment requests on hearing days, and encourage virtual hearings when feasible, provided parties supply working phone numbers and email addresses for electronic notice. The measures align with the Electoral Act 2026 ahead of the 2027 general elections and aim to prevent delays that could undermine constitutional timelines for resolving pre‑election disputes.
