The Federal Government has approved a major nationwide sports infrastructure renewal programme that will rehabilitate the Moshood Abiola National Stadium and upgrade sporting facilities across Nigeria, announced by the National Sports Commission (NSC) this week as part of President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope agenda.

The first phase includes complete rehabilitation of Abuja National Stadium covering tracks, floodlights, athlete facilities, medical infrastructure, and training pitches. The project also features construction of a High Performance Centre, anti-doping laboratory, redevelopment of the stadium's 200-room athletes' hostel into a hotel facility, installation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, and additional office spaces for sports federations.

Beyond Abuja, the initiative will extend to rehabilitation of sports infrastructure nationwide, support for states hosting National Sports Festivals, development of elite training facilities, construction of mini sports centres, and establishing sports facilities at tertiary institutions to strengthen grassroots development.

This ambitious programme aims to address decades of infrastructure decay—Nigeria currently has only one FIFA-approved pitch and relies on overseas facilities for advanced sports medicine. With over 150 million people, the investment seeks to position sports as a driver of youth empowerment, economic growth, talent development, national unity, and job creation.

How will this infrastructure renewal affect your access to quality sporting facilities in your community, and what opportunities might it create for aspiring athletes in your area?
