FG condemns killing of two Nigerians in South Africa, demands justice
The Federal Government has condemned the killing of two Nigerian nationals in South Africa, demanding urgent investigations and prosecution. Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa said in a Sunday statement that Emeka Charles Iroegbu was allegedly killed by Tshwane Metro Police officers on 28 June 2026 in Sunnyside, Pretoria, during gruesome interrogation. The same officers are also alleged to have extrajudicially killed Nnaemeka Mathew Andrew Ekpenyong on 20 April 2026; no arrests have been made despite the officers being known to SAPS. A second victim, Musa Yunana Joe (popularly known as "Big Joe"), was killed in front of his shop on 28 June 2026 in Witbank, Mpumalanga, by unidentified criminals.
Nigeria warns that foreigners are being unduly targeted, raising safety concerns for Nigerians abroad and questioning possible state responsibility under international law. The government urges South African authorities to act swiftly, while advising Nigerians in South Africa to stay calm, avoid volatile areas, move to safer neighbourhoods, and remain security‑conscious. It also notes that evacuation of registered Nigerians continues.
