FG evacuates 66 Nigerians from South Africa over xenophobia; 2nd batch lands Lagos Wednesday night
According to Daily Post, FG evacuated 66 Nigerians from South Africa over xenophobic attacks, landing them at Lagos airport Wednesday night. This brings total evacuated to 324 after 258 arrived June 11. Kunle Soname (ValueJet CEO) facilitated the flight with NiDCOM and Nigerian High Commission officials in SA accompanying returnees.
NiDCOM head Dipo Onabowale said Foreign Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu pledged to evacuate all registered Nigerians in SA, addressing logistical issues from first evacuation. The evacuation responds to renewed xenophobic violence targeting foreigners in SA.
With tensions persisting, should Nigerians in South Africa register with their High Commission for evacuation priority, or rely on local community networks for safety amid recurring xenophobic incidents?
