The Federal Government has introduced Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to improve disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR) of former terrorists and armed violence participants, announced by National Counter Terrorism Centre Coordinator Maj Gen Adamu Laka at a validation workshop in Abuja yesterday. The framework aims to strengthen coordination between security and civilian agencies while establishing uniform standards nationwide.

Pilot implementation begins in Kaduna, Katsina and Zamfara states, with procedures developed after stakeholder consultations and drawing from national experiences and international best practices. Laka emphasized the SOPs define institutional responsibilities, improve accountability and transparency, and translate strategic DDR objectives into practical guidance for implementing bodies across Nigeria.

This initiative represents the government's shift toward non-military approaches to tackling insecurity, focusing on long-term peace in conflict-affected communities. Successful reintegration could reduce relapse into violence and enhance stability in regions previously affected by insurgency and banditry.

What role should community leaders and local institutions play in supporting the reintegration process to ensure its effectiveness and prevent stigmatization of beneficiaries?
