FG Mandates Digital Fish Import Licensing to Boost Local Aquaculture
Federal Government introduces digital system for fish import licensing to modernize regulation, support local production, and reduce reliance on imports. The reform, approved by Minister Adegboyega Oyetola, replaces manual processes with a digital platform expected to streamline approvals, reduce delays, and improve oversight. Only verified importers will receive licenses, helping curb illegal imports while protecting local farmers from unfair competition. The system will enable real-time monitoring of import volumes to identify supply gaps and align with national food security goals. Implementation is underway to eliminate bottlenecks and align with global best practices in fisheries management.
