FG receives corruption report on Nigerian correctional centers
FG receives 18-month report on corruption, torture in Nigerian correctional centers. Panel led by Dr. Magdalene Ajani investigated since Nov 2024, findings will guide reforms to transform facilities from incarceration to rehabilitation centers.
Recidivism dropped significantly from 11,616 inmates in 2023 to just 1,382 in 2025 (88% reduction). Current rehabilitation efforts show progress: 62 inmates in postgraduate studies, 261 in undergraduate programs, 1,125 in other education, and 9,582 in vocational training nationwide.
Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo stated government will implement recommendations through monitoring frameworks, aiming to end dehumanization, corruption and discrimination in correctional facilities. Will these reforms address systemic issues or remain in policy documents without implementation?
