The Federal Government has withdrawn its planned increase in registration fees for the 2027 WASSCE and NECO SSCE exams, keeping the current N27,500 fee for now. This follows public backlash against a June 18, 2026 letter proposing to raise fees to N50,000—an 82% increase—starting next year.

Education Minister Tunji Alausa directed the halt to allow broader consultations with examination bodies, state ministries, school owners, parents' groups, labour unions and other stakeholders. The ministry stressed no fee change will take effect until talks conclude, emphasizing its commitment to inclusive, evidence-based policymaking that protects students' welfare and access to quality education.

While citing rising operational costs in logistics, security, printing, technology and quality assurance as the original rationale for the hike, the government pledged to keep Nigerians updated throughout the review process. Families should monitor official channels for updates, as the final decision on 2027 exam fees remains pending after consultations wrap up.

Will you rely on the current fee staying fixed for 2027, or actively follow the consultation outcome to plan your education budget?
