FIFA announced Friday that fans can bring one factory-sealed, soft plastic 20-ounce (590ml) disposable water bottle into all 2026 World Cup matches in the USA and Canada, reversing its earlier ban on refillable bottles. The policy change comes after public outcry over safety concerns cited for prohibiting reusable containers, which FIFA says could pose injury risks to players and attendees as outside bottles are already banned at several venues for security reasons.

This affects hydration planning for the tournament where forecasters warn 26 of 104 games may exceed dangerous heat stress levels (WBGT >26°C), combining temperature, humidity, wind and sunlight. While FIFA notes misting stations, hydration points and cooling tents will be available inside stadium perimeters, bottled water purchased at venues will be sold at prices 'consistent with other events held at each stadium'—meaning fans should expect standard concession pricing.

For Nigerians traveling to or following the World Cup, this means bringing approved disposable bottles or budgeting for internal purchases, utilizing stadium cooling infrastructure, and monitoring personal heat exposure during matches. Registration for ticket packages remains open via official FIFA channels.
