First Ebola Patient Recovers in DRC Outbreak, Offering Hope Amid Crisis
WHO announces first confirmed Ebola patient recovery in Democratic Republic of Congo, where patient discharged on May 27 after testing negative twice. The outbreak declared May 15 has resulted in 17 confirmed Ebola deaths and 223 suspected fatalities among 125 confirmed cases and over 900 suspected cases.
The Bundibugyo strain causing this outbreak can have up to 50% fatality rate, but current infection fatality appears below 25%. WHO technical officer Anais Legand emphasized early access to care significantly improves survival chances, with more recoveries expected.
