Flash floods and landslides struck the Nepal-Tibet border on August 29, 2026, killing at least 955 people and leaving 4,471 missing, according to Nepal’s disaster agency and Chinese state media. Nepal reported 3,925 missing and 939 dead on its side, while Tibet recorded 546 missing and 16 dead. Among the missing are 592 foreigners, including hydropower workers, soldiers, police, and citizens from over 30 countries such as the US, UK, India, and China. The disaster highlights the growing risk of extreme weather in mountainous regions and underscores the need for emergency preparedness. For Nigerians, the event serves as a reminder to monitor travel advisories, ensure contingency plans for citizens abroad, and support international relief efforts where possible.
