France Football has clarified that winning the 2026 World Cup will not automatically secure the Ballon d’Or; the award will go to the player judged the best of the season, not just the tournament’s star. The magazine reviewed data from 1995, when the Ballon d’Or opened to non‑European players, and found that only four of the seven World Cup champions since then also claimed the prize – a 57 % success rate. Lionel Messi lost to Andrés Iniesta and Xavi in 2010, Cristiano Ronaldo beat Lionel Messi and Manuel Neuer in 2014, and Luka Modrić prevailed despite losing the final in 2018. The pattern only returned when Messi added his 2022 World Cup triumph to the 2023 Ballon d’Or.

For Nigerian fans, the shift means that a standout club season will weigh more than a single tournament moment when judging contenders like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman or Victor Boniface. It also signals that African players hoping to break the continent’s Ballon d’Or drought must dominate in league play and continental club competitions, not just rely on World Cup heroics.

If you’re backing an African star for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, will you judge them by their club season performance or just by what they do in the World Cup?
