Former Japanese PM Yasuo Fukuda dies at 90, known for China diplomacy
Former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda died on October 22 at age 90, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party confirmed. He served as premier for one year from September 2007 after Shinzo Abe's first short-lived term ended.
Fukuda's signature achievement was stabilizing Japan-China relations during a tense period. In May 2008, he invited Chinese President Hu Jintao to Tokyo—the first Chinese head-of-state visit in a decade. The two leaders issued a joint statement committing to a "mutually beneficial relationship based on common strategic interests." Fukuda resigned months later as his approval ratings collapsed, then retired from politics in 2012.
But his diplomatic work continued. As Tokyo-Beijing ties worsened over disputed islands, Fukuda visited China in 2014 to meet President Xi Jinping, paving the way for an Abe-Xi summit during Abe's second term.
For Nigeria's foreign policy watchers, Fukuda's career shows how sustained personal diplomacy can reset even deeply strained bilateral relationships. Japan and China moved from frozen ties to structured engagement because one leader invested in the long game.
What diplomatic relationships could Nigeria reset with similar patient engagement?
