Former Jigawa Governor: Northerners must take responsibility for regional insecurity
Former Governor of Jigawa State and PDP Chieftain, Alhaji Sule Lamido, blamed persistent insecurity in Northern Nigeria on poor leadership and collapse of moral upbringing during an interview with Premier Radio Kano on Wednesday. "Northerners should blame themselves for the insecurity confronting the region," Lamido stated, adding that political leaders are abandoning their core responsibility while focusing more on politics than governance.
According to Lamido, the North must rebuild discipline and proper upbringing among young people, as those behind insurgency and banditry come from within the region itself. "Where are Boko Haram members and bandits coming from? They are our children from the North, they were not thrown from the sky, they are among us," he explained, attributing the crisis to moral decay.
The former minister also supported establishing state police but emphasized the need for proper training and discipline. "There is nothing wrong with state police, but they must be properly trained and guided on how to carry out their duties," Lamido said, criticizing incidents where Northerners arrest fellow Northerners for ransom. He stressed that justice and fairness among Northerners remain critical to restoring peace and stability in the region.
