FUTA Appoints Professor Mary Olowokere as Director of Gender Issues Center
The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has appointed Professor Mary Olowokere as the new Director of the Center for Gender Issues in Science and Technology (CEGIST).
A renowned Professor of Exploration Geophysics, Olowokere brings decades of academic and industry experience to the role. She previously held the prestigious NNPC/Shell Professorial Chair at Obafemi Awolowo University for 10 years and serves as a research advisor to major oil and gas firms.
An alumnus of FUTA (Class of '92), Olowokere rose rapidly from a Graduate Assistant in 1994 to a full Professor by 2011. Her career highlights include:
- Academic Excellence: Published over 80 articles and served as an external examiner globally.
- Leadership: Led FUTA teams to multiple top-tier finishes at the African Regional AAPG/Imperial Barrel Awards.
- Awards: Recipient of the 2022 NAPE Outstanding Earth Science Lecturer Award (NOELA) and multiple Vice-Chancellor awards.
The university cited her "extensive experience in the application of innovative workflows" and her long history of mentoring young professionals as key assets for her new position.
