G-100 pushes for single opposition presidential candidate ahead of 2027 election

The G-100 coalition said it is working to field a single opposition presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, according to a statement by convener Salihu Lukman on Friday. Lukman explained that the planned Summit of Opposition Political Parties, originally set for August 18, has been moved to August 31 to avoid clashing with the National Peace Summit also on August 18. He said the G-100 has held extensive, frank and encouraging consultations with the leadership of six participating opposition parties—including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), and others—as well as with the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives. The discussions showed a broad consensus that the opposition must engage with greater purpose and structure to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy. Lukman added that the coalition will use the intervening period to continue talks with parties and other stakeholders, and to refine proposals and frameworks to be presented at the summit.
