Gas shortage causes electricity drop in Nigeria
Nigeria's electricity supply has dropped significantly due to a severe shortage of gas needed by thermal power plants, which generate most of the country's electricity. The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) reports that only 692 million standard cubic feet of gas was supplied as of February 23, 2026, compared to the required 1,629.75 million cubic feet daily. This shortfall has reduced power generation to an average of 4,300 megawatts, forcing NISO to implement nationwide load shedding to protect the national grid. Small businesses and households are severely affected, with frozen food owners losing stocks daily and others facing rising generator costs. NISO apologised for the inconvenience and stated it's working with stakeholders to restore normal supply once gas availability improves.
