Gentle Strolls Are Not Exercise, Fitness Expert Warns
Fitness expert Joel Uzamere, director at IREP, warns Nigerians that casual 'gentle strolls' offer zero physiological benefit, calling them 'gambling' with ineffective routines. Appearing on Channels Television, Uzamere emphasized the critical difference between physical activity (standing, sitting, dancing) and true exercise, which requires 'calculated pressure' to improve cardiovascular health and posture. He debunked the myth that any movement counts as a workout, stating: 'There is no physiological benefit; you are not increasing your cardiovascular system.' For those using stairs as fitness, he clarified that intensity must be designed for individual needs, with a 20% intensity reduction recommended during Nigeria's current heatwave. Hydration is another key issue: Uzamere stated drinking only when thirsty is a 'physiological failure,' advising men to drink four litres daily and women three litres, increasing to seven litres during workouts. He also challenged the 'pink weight' culture, urging women to embrace strength training for functionality, noting arthritis affects eight of ten women by age 50. 'Grandmothers still carry grandchildren,' he argued, 'who needs training most?'
