On August 4, German authorities discovered an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport positioned next to Ukrainian Antonov An-124 cargo aircraft. The device was safely defused by Federal Police specialists who removed the detonator. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated on Tuesday that police investigations, offence patterns, and intelligence findings establish Russian responsibility for the attempted attack, citing a pattern of "Russian hybrid operations."

In response, Germany is ordering the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and terminating the contract for the Russian House in Berlin, which Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said is used for espionage and propaganda spread. The government is also imposing tighter entry controls for Russian nationals and increasing pressure on Moscow's shadow fleet—old tankers used to evade Western sanctions post-2022 Ukraine invasion. Two additional drones linked to suspected Russian operations were later found: one collided with a DHL cargo aircraft, another near the airport on August 14.

Russia denies involvement, vowing "mirror-image" retaliation, while its foreign ministry accused Germany of "sponsoring terrorism." NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte affirmed the alliance's full solidarity with Germany.

As a key EU backer of Ukraine amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Germany's escalation could influence global sanctions regimes and energy markets. How might these heightened EU-Russia tensions affect Nigeria's access to European energy supplies, agricultural imports, or diplomatic channels in international forums?
