German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has predicted an imminent end to the current leadership in Iran as mass protests enter their third week. Speaking on Tuesday during his visit to India, Merz said any government that stays in power only by force is "effectively at the end." He stated: "We are now seeing the final days and weeks of this regime." The European Union is working on additional sanctions against Iran over the crackdown on demonstrators. In a post on X, Merz told Iranian leadership to protect its people, calling the violence "not an expression of strength, but of weakness." UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said he was "horrified" by attacks by Iranian security forces, citing reports of hundreds killed. He demanded accountability and urged authorities to halt violence, restore internet and telecommunication access, and stop labeling protesters as terrorists. Türk warned against using the death penalty through expedited judicial proceedings and called for investigations into killings and abuses. The UN says internet shutdowns obstruct monitoring and disrupt emergency services. The Commissioner emphasized that Iranian people's demands for fairness, equality, and justice must be heard. For Nigerian observers, this crisis affects global oil markets and regional stability. The situation raises questions about international pressure: should the UN impose stronger sanctions, or would that harm ordinary Iranians already suffering under the crackdown?
