Ghana on Monday urged citizens to avoid non-essential travel to South Africa due to ongoing xenophobic attacks targeting Africans. The attacks by 'anti-immigrant vigilantes' have resulted in injuries, looting, business closures, and property loss across multiple cities.

The Ghanaian government has taken diplomatic action by summoning South Africa's Acting High Commissioner and petitioning the African Union. Last week, Ghana evacuated its first batch of nationals, with each returnee receiving psychosocial support, medical care, and reintegration allowance to rebuild their lives.

Nigerians in South Africa should exercise extreme caution and monitor official Nigerian travel advisories. If you're planning travel to South Africa, postpone non-essential trips until safety improves. The Mahama Administration reaffirmed its commitment to protect citizens abroad, indicating this situation may escalate further.
