Jet fuel prices expected 70% higher due to Middle East war, adding $100 billion to airlines' collective fuel bill this year. Despite these soaring costs, airline executives at IATA's Rio conference revealed they're more concerned about taxes and restrictive regulations than fuel prices.

IATA director general Willie Walsh noted that while fuel costs are significant, the industry is facing "populist" regulations—particularly from the EU—that impose additional burdens through ticket taxes and strict fuel requirements. The EU has been criticized for defending higher passenger compensation and mandating minimum non-fossil fuel amounts in aircraft tanks.

Industry researchers downplayed fears of actual fuel shortages, stating "in our base case we don't have shortages" even if the Gulf conflict persists.

For Nigerian travelers, this means potential airfare increases as airlines pass higher fuel costs to consumers. Local airlines like Air Peace and Arik may face profitability challenges, affecting service quality and route availability. Travelers should consider booking in advance if prices climb and monitor regulatory changes that could impact travel costs and passenger rights.
