Global oil supply buffer drops sharply as 1bn barrels withdrawn, market at risk

Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser said global commercial oil inventories have dropped below six billion barrels after more than one billion barrels were withdrawn to cushion disruptions from the Middle East crisis, with less than 10% of the remaining stock readily available to the market. He spoke at the Energy Intelligence Forum in London this week, warning that the system is already straining.

Global oil demand stands at about 102 million barrels per day, while the Group of Seven nations’ planned release of up to 100 million barrels from emergency reserves equals less than one day of consumption. Refined product flows lag: diesel and gasoline shipments are only 58% of pre‑war levels, and Brent crude has traded above $100 per barrel, up from around $72 before the war. A UNDP policy brief notes that fossil‑fuel subsidies could exceed $1 trillion this year if governments continue shielding households from energy shocks.

For Nigerians, tighter global supplies may push up local petrol and diesel prices, especially if subsidy adjustments follow. Motorists should monitor announcements from the PPPRA and consider fuel‑saving habits, carpooling, or adjusting travel plans. Businesses that rely on diesel generators ought to budget for higher operating costs. Staying informed through reliable sources like NNPC or Punch can help anticipate changes.

Will you adjust your fuel usage or budget for higher pump prices if the global oil buffer remains thin?
