Google announced Gemini Spark, an always‑on AI agent that runs in the background across Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides, YouTube and Maps, at its May 2026 I/O event. Unlike typical chatbots, Spark continuously monitors your inbox, calendar and files, completing multi‑step tasks such as sorting emails, drafting reports, flagging hidden subscription charges or creating client folders without you having to prompt it each time. It runs on Google’s cloud via virtual machines, so it keeps working even after you close your laptop or lock your phone. Users choose which apps Spark can access, and the agent asks for confirmation before high‑stakes actions like sending emails or spending money. Third‑party apps like Canva, OpenTable and Instacart can connect through Google’s Model Context Protocol, with more integrations rolling out.

For Nigerians running small businesses, managing client communication or overwhelmed by email, Spark promises to save hours on repetitive admin work. However, the rollout so far is limited to US‑based Google AI Ultra subscribers and a macOS beta released in June 2026; there is no confirmed timeline for wider international release, meaning most users across Africa still cannot access it.

Watch for Google’s expansion announcements, explore local automation tools or AI assistants that work with your current apps, and keep your digital files organized so you can plug into an agent like Spark when it becomes available in your region.
