Gunfire reported at Niger's strategic Base 101 near Niamey airport

Gunfire and explosions were heard at Air Force Base 101 in Niamey on Saturday morning, with residents reporting heavy gunfire from about 1:00 am until daybreak and additional bursts at 7:00 am local time. The base, located within Niamey's international airport complex, houses headquarters of Niger's Russian Africa Corps partners and the command of the Alliance of Sahel States (Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali).

The incident occurred at a site previously attacked twice this year by jihadist groups - first by Islamic State in the Sahel (EIS) in January, then by Al-Qaeda-linked Group for Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) in late June. Niger has been under military junta rule since a July 2023 coup, with General Abdourahamane Tiani as leader.
