Gusau resigns as NFF president amid corruption claims and FIFA ban threats

On August 27, Ibrahim Gusau resigned as president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), a move that shocked many given the rarity of voluntary exits in Nigerian sports leadership. His departure followed the historic failure of the Super Falcons to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup—the first time ever—and the Super Eagles’ absence from consecutive men’s World Cups. Allegations swirl that N17 billion in funds were mismanaged under his administration, with critics pointing to poor hotel accommodations for players during qualifiers and questionable financial deals.

The resignation has triggered fears of FIFA sanctions due to perceived government interference, although President Bola Tinubu has only called for “comprehensive reforms” through the National Sports Commission (NSC), which says it is working closely with FIFA to avoid sanctions.
