HDAN urges APC to focus on affordable housing, not phone giveaways for lasting impact
The Housing Development Advocacy Network (HDAN) has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to shift political empowerment efforts from distributing phones and laptops to launching expansive affordable homeownership programmes for Nigerians. In a statement signed by Executive Director Festus Adebayo, HDAN argued that while digital devices aid communication and learning, owning a home offers lasting security, dignity, and a tangible economic asset that can generate wealth across generations. The group noted that millions of Nigerians continue to grapple with rising rents and limited access to decent housing, making homeownership a pressing national priority. HDAN urged the APC and other political parties to partner with developers, mortgage institutions and the private sector to roll out large‑scale schemes such as mortgage support, rent‑to‑own options and serviced land allocations targeting low‑ and middle‑income earners. It emphasized that expanding homeownership would stimulate job creation in construction, manufacturing, finance, logistics and related sectors, while reducing poverty and strengthening family stability. The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to work with governments, legislators and stakeholders to embed affordable housing as a core pillar of social intervention and national development strategy.
