Healthy diet cost in Nigeria hits N1,589 daily in April 2026, up 3% month-on-month and nearly 5% year-on-year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. Animal source foods make up 40% of the cost while providing only 13% of calories, driving the overall expense.

Ekiti tops the list at N2,036 per day, followed by Imo (N2,018) and Bayelsa (N1,909). Adamawa remains the most affordable at N1,143, with the FCT at N1,278 and Akwa Ibom at N1,314. At the zonal level, the South-East averages N1,830, the South-West N1,753, and the North-East the lowest at N1,415.

The report notes that while prices of starchy staples and oils and fats fell over the past year, all other food groups rose, pushing up the total. The cheapest items across states are Beans White in the legumes group (found in 65% of state sectors), Palm Oil in oils and fats (62% of states), and Garri White or Maize (White) grains, each accounting for about a third of least-cost starch selections.

Will you adjust your meals toward these lower-cost staples, look for ways to increase your food budget, or accept a less varied diet to cope with the rising cost of eating well?
