The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to urgently improve welfare for armed forces personnel, stating that poor conditions, inadequate equipment, and insufficient logistics undermine Nigeria’s fight against insecurity. In a statement issued on Monday to mark Armed Forces Remembrance Day 2026, the caucus, led by Minority Leader Rep. Kingsley Chinda, said soldiers who risk their lives daily deserve better support. They stressed that improved welfare packages, enhanced funding, and modern military hardware would boost morale and operational efficiency. The caucus argued that addressing soldiers’ welfare is a necessary step toward restoring peace, as insecurity continues to threaten economic growth and social stability. They called for comprehensive schemes including better living conditions, timely allowance payments, healthcare, insurance, and family support for fallen heroes. The Minority Caucus also pledged legislative interventions and oversight to ensure transparent use of defence budgets and adequate resources for the Armed Forces to protect lives and property. The statement was signed by Minority Leader Rep. O.K. Chinda, Minority Whip Rt. Hon. Ali Isa J.C., Deputy Minority Leader Rt. Hon. Aliyu Madaki, and Deputy Minority Whip Rt. Hon. George Ozodinobi. The call comes as Nigeria continues to grapple with Boko Haram insurgency, banditry, and farmer-herder conflicts across multiple states. With troop morale and equipment directly tied to operational success, how should the government balance improving soldier welfare with broader national budget constraints?
