House of Representatives approved the extension of the 2025 capital budget implementation from June 30, 2026 to September 30, 2026, following an emergency sitting on Monday, June 12. House Leader Julius Ihonvbere led the debate, noting that substantial funds released to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies remained unspent due to administrative bottlenecks, procurement delays, and implementation challenges.

The extension aims to prevent the abandonment of critical infrastructure projects nationwide, give ongoing works time to reach completion, and allow settlement of outstanding obligations. The Acting Clerk of the House, Ibrahim Sidi, issued the notice for the emergency sitting via memo on Sunday, citing Order Five, Rule 2 subsection 2 of the Standing Orders.

This affects contractors, workers, and citizens who rely on completed roads, schools, and hospitals for daily life and economic activity.

With the new Sept 30 deadline, will MDA officials accelerate contract execution and payments to avoid further delays, or will persistent bottlenecks undermine the extended timeline?
