The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to rescind its ban on recognizing university degrees from Benin Republic and Togo. The green chamber, following reports of fraud, recommended a case-by-case verification mechanism instead of blanket sanctions. It also called for collaboration with Benin and Togo to strengthen education frameworks and public awareness campaigns to verify foreign qualifications. The ban, imposed in January 2024 after an undercover investigation revealed degrees obtained in under two months, was defended by the then Education Minister as necessary to protect Nigeria's image. The House emphasized alignment with bilateral and international treaty obligations.
