Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban conceded defeat Sunday after 16 years in power, losing to conservative challenger Peter Magyar in parliamentary elections with record 77.8% turnout. The 62-year-old leader, seeking a fifth consecutive term, saw his Fidesz party crushed by Magyar's Tisza party, which secured 138 seats (more than two-thirds of 199 parliamentary seats).

Orban, who transformed Hungary into an 'illiberal democracy' that clashed with Brussels over Ukraine and rule-of-law issues, acknowledged 'painful but unambiguous' results. Magyar, a 45-year-old former government insider promising to fight corruption and improve public services, declared: 'We liberated Hungary; we took back our homeland.'

The victory represents a major setback for nationalists including US President Trump and Russian President Putin, who had supported Orban. EU leaders celebrated, with Ursula von der Leyen stating 'Hungary has chosen Europe.' Analysts called it a 'true democratic revolution' in the central European nation of 9.5 million people, despite both camps alleging foreign interference during the campaign.
