Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun resigned from his position on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, according to a presidency source speaking to Channels Television. Police authorities have not yet commented or issued an official statement confirming the resignation. The move comes after sustained controversy over Egbetokun's extended tenure beyond the mandatory retirement age of 60, which critics argued breached police service regulations. Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd IGP by President Bola Tinubu on June 19, 2023, and initially promised to "chase away" criminals. His tenure was extended through the Police Act (Amendment) Bill passed by the National Assembly in July 2024, allowing him to serve until the end of his four-year term. The Nigeria Police Council confirmed his substantive appointment on October 31, 2023. It remains unclear who will succeed him as IGP.
