INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan faces controversy over allegations that an X account bearing his name posted partisan content supporting APC during the 2023 general election. The commission denies the claims, calling it a "malicious and coordinated campaign of calumny." The controversy has sparked calls for investigation from opposition figures and civil society groups.

SDP presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo and tech expert Gbenga Sesan offered differing perspectives on the matter. Adebayo noted that while digital content can be manipulated, forensic analysis could trace ownership. He stressed that even if the account belonged to Amupitan, it wouldn't automatically disqualify him, though integrity concerns would arise if he denies the evidence. Sesan questioned INEC's outright denial, pointing to digital archives showing records linked to the handle 'joash amupitan' and suggesting that account creation requires access to personal email or phone numbers.

The matter could be resolved through court challenges or a National Assembly investigation. Amupitan, nominated by President Tinubu in October 2025 and confirmed by Senate, faces questions about his neutrality as Nigeria's electoral chief. The controversy highlights tensions around digital evidence and public trust in electoral institutions.
